My experience assembling a reprap 3D printer

Posted on February 7, 2025 by Sami Elkady

The idea of having a 3D printer was infecting my thoughts as a new experience so I decided to have one. while searching internet for which model I shocked from the prices which reduce my passion of having a 3d printer; but while digging more and more in the internet desert I found an oasis of knowledge about 3D printer. this oasis called RepRap which described as the humanity’s first general-purpose self-replicating manufacturing machine. RepRap takes the form of a free desktop 3D printer capable of printing plastic objects. Since many parts of RepRap are made from plastic and RepRap prints those parts, RepRap self-replicates by making a kit of itself – a kit that anyone can assemble given time and materials. It also means that – if you’ve got a RepRap – you can print lots of useful stuff, and you can print another RepRap for a friend.

this raised the idea again inside my head. it toke me 3 months to decide which RepRap I should build. finally I decided to get some thing small (Prusa i3). I wrote a list of required parts and start collecting its prices and listed all in one list. I found that it will cost me around $600 so I started searching for some vendors on ebay. I shocked when I fount a seller sell new unassembled printer for $350 so I toke less than 2 seconds to think on this offer and take the action.

As I am in Qatar it will take long time to get a package like this (I thought) so I used one of the fastest shipping agency (Aramex) that provide a shipping addresses around the world
